As a business owner you know that you can’t do everything yourself. Try as you might, things adds up. You’re growing your business and pouring your blood, sweat, and tears into the service you’re providing your clients. And, oftentimes, that  translates to your business being held together by spit and scotch tape. When you’re a super hero doing everything and doing it all 100% you’re tired, overworked, and not finding the space and freedom you started your business to have. 

Chances are you’ve had the internal conversation with yourself about growing your team so you can delegate and have ended up talking yourself out of it. Pulling the trigger on delegating can be really hard and it’s all based on that conversation. With these shifts in perspective, a little commitment, and putting a few things in place you can confidently decide to grow your team and get back much deserved time that you can put into your personal life or spend on the money making activities in your business. 

“I don’t have time to train someone…”

So many decisions you make in your business are going to boil down to ROI. Is the juice going to be worth the squeeze? This works for financial investments but it also works for time investments. What can you spend time on now that is going to make it so you spend less time on something in the future. That’s exactly what training is. If you can’t designate time to bring someone up to speed on the tasks you need help on in your business they will forever be your responsibility. Sure, you might be able to knock something out in 20 minutes and dread the idea of having to spend 40 minutes doing it with someone else a few times. You have to think long term! 40 minutes now to not have to do that 20 minute task again! That’s a free discovery call or consultation that potentially equals thousands of dollars of business for you. 

“I can just do it myself and I’ll know it’s done right…”

Well, ain’t that the truth! Of course you can. You’ve been doing it all along, doing it how you want it done, when you want it done and could check it off the list without a second thought. But this isn’t a question of capability. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean that you should be doing it. As a service provider, you’re the product of your business. Your clients are paying for your time and your expertise. For every minute you spend doing things that don’t actually need to be done by you you’re saying no to growing your client base and, at the end of the day, your income!  Do you know how much time a week or month you spend on those tasks that absolutely do not require your attention? What money making tasks could you be focusing that time on inside to grow your business? Take on more clients that would bring in an additional $5k a month? Book speaking opportunities to get your name out there? Spend some time developing your next service, offering, program, course, etc.? What are you saying no to by keeping every little (or not-so-little thing on your plate?

“I’ve tried delegating before and it’s never worked out…”

The second you pass things off to someone you’ve got to trust that they’re going to execute correctly. Having this mentality equates to not having that trust that you need. If you aren’t able to trust someone to do all the things you’ve got to go back to the beginning. Fact of the matter is if you’re not setting your team up for success by properly training them and providing them with the resources they need to be able to do everything how and when you would do them… well… more often than not, that’s the issue. Not the person. Get clear on the things that you need help with, put proper systems and processes in place, and have everything documented and organized. Putting the work in on the front end makes it so that you can pass those items off and be confident that anyone that steps in to do them will do them right.

We only have so much time and unless we are able to grow our team to take on the tasks in our business that are necessary for it to function but don’t require our attention in order to get done we’re putting extreme limitations on how much our business can grow. So, step #1… accept that. Step #2… get out of the mindset that keeps you coming back to the conclusion that it’s better for you to be spending your time on everything in your business. Step #3… Designate time to get clear on what the items you don’t need to be doing are and put everything in place that is going to make it so that you are able to find the most qualified candidate and get them up to speed quickly and easily.
